INCREASING RESILIENCE THROUGH PEER SUPPORT: PART 2
Presented By:
Dr. Stephanie M. Conn
Course Description:
The first part of this webinar series will describe how police officers tend to regard themselves by the
professional police identity role to the detriment of other identity roles (parent, spouse, family member,
community member, etc.). The singular reliance on this identity role has shown to be problematic, as it
isolates them from their family and community, limits their worldview and coping skills, and contributes to
the risk of suicide, especially when nearing retirement. I will offer practical recommendations on how to
maintain a broader identity based upon my research on police identity processes. Part two of the series offers
recommendations on developing, training, and maintaining a healthy, effective peer support team. This
recognizes that the only thing worse than having no peer support team is having an unhealthy and ineffective
one. Part three offers recommendations for choosing a mental health professional for your agency (peer
support team, as a preferred therapy provider, advisor for wellness program, hostage/crisis negotiation
teams, etc.) or for yourself. **AZPOST Approved**
